COMPOSITE #31

June 2, 2022 - Presented by Art Souterrain and XN Quebec

Art Souterrain and XN Quebec are pleased to host Composite #31, which will take place on June 2, 2022 at La Cité International (950 Rue du Square Victoria, Montreal)

COMPOSITE is a bi-monthly networking event dedicated to digital creativity. It was born from an initiative of the Conseil des arts de Montréal, and is now coordinated by MAPP_MTL in collaboration with important actors of the Montreal digital sector. The goal of this event is to create a recurrent meeting space between the art and industry sectors of the digital sector, by encouraging encounters and pollination between creators, artist-run centers, organizations, businesses and digital professionals.

Each COMPOSITE follows the same structure. A BLITZ MINUTE INSPIRATION introduces the evening: 10 digital actors each have one minute to share a project that has recently had an impact on them, inspired them, touched them... This is followed by 6 keynote presentations, each lasting 6 minutes, of projects previously selected by the COMPOSITE committee through a call for participants. They can be from the art, industry or social innovation sectors; the guiding thread is their common capacity to inspire, stimulate innovation and awaken in the spectators a desire for discovery and exploration. The event concludes with an evening of networking and discussion, allowing both presenters and participants to network and develop their respective projects.

SELECTED PROJECTS

RÉSONANCES ATEMPORELLES – PATRICK DIONNE, MIKI GINGRAS
https://tracadigash.carletonsurmer.com/resonances-atemporelles
Résonances Atemporelles is an augmented reality project created by visual artists Patrick Dionne and Miki Gingras in collaboration with interactive media designers Fraqe and Thibault Landel. The AR experience materializes on the Tracadigash mural created by the duo PatMiki for the 150th anniversary of Carleton sur Mer in Gaspésie. Using phrases found on old postcards combined with vernacular film footage taken by vacationers, users can create and send their own digital postcard. To do so, they have to capture 5 words by walking the camera of their phone at a distance of about 2 meters from the mural. In the form of an exquisite corpse, an algorithm connects the selected words with phrases from vintage postcards and archival film footage. The result is a digital postcard that anyone can share with their friends and family by email or on social media.

NUAGE DE POINTS – DU COLLECTIF SILICON BEATS
https://www.facebook.com/siliconbeats/
Silicon Beats is a collective of creation, performance and improvisation in electro-digital music. Composed of about fifteen musicians from various backgrounds, the project brings together artists from the Montreal electronic music scene around performance, improvisation and sharing. The collective defends a proximity with the public and places itself as a vector for the popularization of electro-digital creation tools by offering film-concerts, open improvisation evenings, workshops and immersive experiences. Forced to distance themselves lately, the collective, used to expressing themselves together in the same space, wanted to diversify their collective digital creation practice. Thus was born Nuage de Points, a digital device of sound expression capable of pushing the limits of our creative fields, pushing us to create works for a new medium. Nuage de points is an outdoor spatial sound installation creating an immersive audio space of 324m2, all without wired connection. Completely autonomous and programmable, Nuage de Points is deployed outdoors and in public spaces and aims to democratize access to immersive music by offering an experience that usually requires a specialized room. The opportunity, for an hour and a half, to experience spatial sound.

LISTENING TO THE WALLS – IDA TONINATO & TREBUCHET ATELIER
https://vimeo.com/672004788

Listening to the Walls is a series of virtual reality works that immerse the user in a sonic and visual world at the boundaries of the real and the imagined. Developed by musician Ida Toninato in partnership with Trebuchet Atelier, the Listening to the Walls series is inspired by a deep interest in particular acoustic spaces: from cathedrals to Urbex environments, through natural spaces hosting rare animal species, sound unfolds in intimate relationship with its environment. Conversely, many musicians have a special relationship with acoustics, the way sound bounces off walls, reverberates, or how forests or waterfalls sing.

https://aatoaa.com/
A composition defines the very nature of something - an atom, a human, music. It is also the result of an action, where we build the present moment by altering the past. A wooden cube becomes the unit that rhythms and catalyzes our actions to give life to dormant forces, to our imagination. By manipulating the cubes on the table, Composition becomes a world, a sculpture, an instrument and a dance with many hands. Created by Vincent Morisset, Caroline Robert, Édouard Lanctôt-Benoit and Vlooper. Composition is a project that was realized during an artistic residency with Studio PHI. The PHI team: Pheobe Greenberg, Isabelle Brodeur, Michaël Lefebvre, Julie Tessier, Sarah St-Laurent Migos, Marc-André Nadeau, Julie Tremblay, Myriam Achard, Vincent Lafrenière, Joël Guérin-Simard, Jeremy Felker. A production of the AATOAA studio.

CIÖ – GANESH BARON ALOIR, ANAËLLE BOYER-LACOSTE, OLIVIER LANDRY-GAGNON ET HAMIE ROBITAILLE
https://www.instagram.com/_cio_official_/

CiÖ is an interactive audiovisual installation created around the theme of mental illness. Through the psychic universe of a depressive artificial intelligence, the multimedia components are activated to develop the public's empathy towards those who live with psychological health problems.

It is under this issue that Ganesh Baron Aloir, brings together his colleagues Anaëlle Boyer-Lacoste, Olivier Landry-Gagnon and Hamie Robitaille to collectively reflect on what makes us human in a world of performance, speed and solitude, coupled with our machines. These reflections lead them to explore the links between machine functions, programmed, and human emotions, unpredictable, according to three main threads: emotions, the body and liquid. The amalgam of the members' disciplines are organized with the common goal of reflecting and experimenting with various creative processes on the emotional complexity of the human and the induction of emotion through different artistic mediums. The members of the collective seek to create a vehicle for empathy towards a very human problem, mental health, through an interactive and transdisciplinary multimedia installation.
